The Daly River
and areas west towards Port Keats are becoming well known for their
traditional aboriginal art. Galleries at Nauiyu Community, Peppimenarti
and Port Keats (Wadaye) all exhibit and sell art produced by the local
people. The closest gallery at Nauiyu (Merrepen Arts) holds an art
festival the first weekend in June each year. This festival also includes
performances by the Darwin Symphony Orchestra, local bands and is a casual
way to spend a weekend and meet local people. Displays of bush tucker, basket
weaving etc are given.
This picture and the one to the
right are examples of paintings done by a local woman and one of several
being sold for her through the Daly River Mango Farm. There is no
commission paid for the sale of these paintings and all proceeds go to the
artist. Please click on the picture for a larger view
